Hollywood, California—Attendance rose this year when filmmakers, technical gurus, crafts-persons and content creators gathered to soak up the latest industry technology and techniques at the renowned Paramount Studios for Cine Gear Expo 2018.

Sony displayed its latest CineAlta Camera series, the Venice. Blackmagic Design showcased their new Blackmagic 4K Pocket Cinema Camera. Canon was on deck with their new EOS C700 FF Cinema Camera. RED showed off their new WEAPON with Monstro 8K sensor. Panasonic displayed their 4K VariCam LT, Pure and recently introduced 5.7K AU-EVA1 compact cinema cameras. ARRI showed off their 4.5K Alexa LF camera and latest additions to their expanding SkyPanels lighting. In total, over 300 booths demonstrated the latest professional production gear.

The VIP Reception and Awards Ceremony recognized individuals and manufacturers for outstanding achievement and contribution to the art of filmmaking. Presented by Cine Gear’s co-founder, Juliane Grosso, the timely and well-deserved Pioneering Women in Cinematography Award went to Ellen M. Kuras ASC, Reed Morano ASC, Nancy Schreiber ASC, Amy Vincent ASC, Mandy Walker ASC, and Cynthia Pusheck ASC. The annual Technical Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to optics giant Zeiss and received by Joerg Schmitz, Vice President Consumer Products Division
and Michael Schiehlen, Senior Director Consumer Products Division.

Always a big draw, this year’s Film Series winners included Pitter Patter Goes My Heart in the Student Short Film category. This project from Columbia University and Filmakedemie Wien, was directed by Christoph Rainer and produced by Elsa Kremser, Mark Szilagyi and Nikolai Gemel, and was lensed by Georg Geutebrueck.

In the Commercial/Music Video category the award went to Man in Tie Dye directed/produced and shot by Dakota Adney. Neutral, produced/directed by Nathan Barnatt and shot by Aaron Meister, was the Independent Short Film winner. The Award for Visual Excellence went to the Vienna Film Academy for Excuse Me, I’m Looking for the Ping-Pong Room and My Girlfriend, directed by Bernhard Wenger, produced by Florian Bayer, Clara Koenig, and Bernhard Wenger, and lensed by Albin Wildner.

Film Series winners received generous prizes, donated by Blackmagic Design, Brother, Chapman-Leonard, Cushlight, Fluotec, IKAN, InkTip, LaCie, Magic Gadgets, Mole-Richardson, On Set Headsets, Profound, Quasar Science, LLC, ScriptE, Sigma, SKB, Tenba, Tiffen, Variety, Wooden Camera, and Zacuto.

This year’s Cine Gear Expo Technical Awards garnered over 100 entries and the esteemed panel of 14 judges took their jobs seriously. The diverse list of winners, from lenses to lighting to cranes to cameras can be found at http://www.cinegearexpo.com/la-expo-technical-awards-2018

The big news came during the Hollywood Expo when show owners Juliane Grosso and Karl Kresser officially announced that due to years of popular requests from the growing southern filmmaking community, Cine Gear Expo Atlanta will premier in Atlanta, October 6 and 7, 2018 at the world-famous Pinewood Studios. Like the Hollywood show, the new event will feature exhibits, seminars, exclusive screenings, and special events.
