Tihanyi Chooses Schneider B+W Filters for The Mabibi Project

When photographer Meryl Tihanyi recently travelled to Kenya to document The Mabibi Project, she brought along B+W XS-Pro Digital UV filters. The Mabibi Project’s charter was to bring a clean water-well to hundreds of widows, grandmothers and children living in the western border town of Bumala. The area’s survivors had been left to struggle after the AIDS virus killed most of the adult population of that poor area. While in Kenya, she took the opportunity to visit the Kawangware slum within the capital city of Nairobi.

“It is particularly difficult to effectively convey the experience of Kawangware, which is home to 900,000 souls,” explains Tihanyi. “Kenya, during the dry season, is a very dusty place. The conditions of living are truly challenging to every side of the human spirit. To portray this, I knew I needed the highest quality filters for my lenses.

“The glass on the B+W XS-Pro Digital UV filters is flawless and lightweight. With thousands of dollars of equipment, including a Canon 5D and 16-35mm, 70-200mm, 50mm and 100mm lenses in tow, I needed filters to protect my lenses without compromising the quality of the resulting photographs. After experiencing the high quality of B+W, I use no other filters.

“The colors of Kenya are rich in red tones. The UV filters helped to keep the blue UV rays out of the images. The result was photographs with natural, true-to-life, rich red tones. Little or no Photoshop adjustment was needed. The sun in Kenya is extremely strong. It was overpowering and high in the sky most of the day. These conditions created some significant exposure challenges. The Schneider B+W polarizer allowed me to keep the detail in the faces of the people and still have detail and color saturation in the sky.

“In one particular shot I had an older orphan girl carrying a younger orphan toddler,” she explains. “The red earth was vibrant and glowing under the stormy gray sky. Without the use of filters, this shot would have been washed out, flat and boring. But the rich earth and the detail in the sky made it work.”

Manufactured in Germany using Schott optical glass, B+W XS-Pro Digital filters provide advanced water and dirt repelling MRC nano multi-layer coatings. MRC nano technology also provides excellent reflection reducing properties and is especially scratch resistant.

East coast-based photographer Meryl Tihanyi specializes in taking striking images that identify a culture, region or vital issue. To depict the human struggle in Kenya, she worked cooperatively with One Child’s Village and The Friends of Mercy Children’s Centre.
