SmallHD Wins 2014 Cine Gear Expo New Technology Award
SmallHD, creators of the world’s first high definition on-camera monitor, showed their new monitors to the Hollywood community at the Cine Gear Expo in June, held on the back lot at Paramount Studios. SmallHD’s DP7-PRO has redefined the way field monitors operate on set.
A new color-grading software system incorporated into DP7-PRO monitors brought SmallHD the Expo’s prestigious New Technology Award in the Other Products category. This first of its kind toolset provides the ability to perform real-time color grading for on-set viewing, sending downstream via HDMI or SDI to another monitor, and producing LUT tables for post-production. The upgrade also enables the DP7-PRO to simultaneously display previously created effects or animations as reference frames along with live video on-site.
On-set color grading is particularly valuable because many cameras, by design, record flat-looking video to benefit the post-production process. A director or client on the shoot can be underwhelmed by the appearance of this flat-looking video. With the color-grading software installed, the DP7-PRO on-camera HD monitor allows the decision makers to view a color-graded version of the video. The recorded video can then be sent along to post production accompanied by the LUTs (look up tables) from the on-set color grading as a starting point for the colorist to begin working.
The Cine Gear Expo awards were presented to the best debuting products unveiled in 2014. Winners were selected on-site at the Cine Gear Expo convention by a panel of industry experts, with an eye toward the latest in technology. The panel of judges evaluated only new products that were launched in the United States for the first time in 2014.
